BikeNewark has teamed up with the University of Delaware and the City of Newark to present Community Bike Days—a weeklong event to promote bicycling health, safety, and encouragement in Newark. It involves late-weekday activities at area outdoor venues and culminates with a Saturday morning event called the Community Fun Ride. Each of the weekday activities will include food, demos, and information and conclude with a short low-stress group ride. The Community Fun Ride comprises two separate rides—the Family Fun Ride and the Newark Loop Ride (see below).

Community Fun Ride

Community Fun Ride course mapOn Saturday, Sept. 7, at 10:15 a.m., the Family Fun Ride heads south on a 2.25-mile out-and-back course along the Pomeroy and Hall Trails and is meant to get parents and children out bicycling together. The Newark Loop Ride begins at 11:00 a.m. by heading north along the Pomeroy and is a fun, yet more challenging, 8.25-mile course on trails and through quiet neighborhoods. It is limited to participants 11 years of age and older. Check-in and on-site registration (cash or check only on event day) for each ride begins at 9:45 a.m.

The Newark Loop Ride will feature the newly opened “Pomeroy Connector” trail that bridges Creek Road and western neighborhoods in Newark as well as portions of BikeNewark’s proposed Newark Bikeways low-stress network.

Each registrant receives a quality cinch bag that includes a water-bottle compartment, a ticket for one free scoop of UDairy ice cream (at the event site only), bicycling information, and a bicycle seat cover. Plus, there will be free giveaways before and after the Family Fun Ride, including a Trek bicycle.

Vendors, food, face painting, and music all make the Community Fun Ride a nice way to cap off a week of community-oriented fun that centers on bicycle education, civility, and safety, as well as promoting bicycling as a healthy lifestyle choice.

Weekday Events

Each weekday, there was a sponsored event at a local park or gathering place (see full schedule below) that included announcement of prize winners (see Quizzes below), food, demos, and bicycle-related information giveaways. Each event concluded with a very short, low-stress group ride, perfect for families, that included a portion of Saturday’s Newark Loop Ride course.

Daily Online Quizzes

Congratulations to Friday’s online quiz winner, Jo Anne Deshon.
Congratulations to Thursday’s online quiz winner David Schultz.
Congratulations to Wednesday’s online quiz winner, Anne-Claire Frank, and cycle RPM winner, Shawn Alexander.
Congratulations to Tuesday’s online quiz winner, Rachel Mroz, and kids’ on-site quiz winner, Magnolia Kneavel.

In keeping with the Community Bike Days focus on bicycling health, safety, and encouragement, each weekday during the week, there was an online quiz announced on social media (Facebook – /BikeNewark and Twitter – @BikeNewark)—#bikedays2019. The entrant with the most correct answers who submitted earliest was eligible to win a prize, which was given out at each day’s late-day event. For kids under 16, there was also an on-site quiz opportunity each day and a chance for them to win a prize.
